What is Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT)?

VRT stands for Vehicle Registration Tax is an amount which Irish people need to pay when they register a new vehicle or importing a vehicle into Ireland from other country within 30 days. If anyone buy a new motor from a dealer, it also include VRT in the sticker price. If you import a car yourself, you pay VRT directly to the Revenue Commissioners at your local National Car Testing Service centre.

VRT is calculated by your vehicle's Open Market Selling Price (OMSP). From January, 2021 the VRT result is depend on CO₂ emissions. If your motor is clean you will pay less VRT and if your car pollute the environment you need to pay more VRT. This helps make low emission vehicle cheaper to register and also encourage Irish people to buy greener cars.

You also need to take the VRT test and see if you can get a VRT rebate. Don’t forget to check your Irish road tax too, because it's a separate cost.

Electric and hybrid vehicles

Electric Vehicle (EVs) will get the VRT relief up to €5,000 on both newly registered and imported (EVs). This discount is applies at the time of registration process. Electric Vehicles are in Category A, and VRT is 7% on it but if the OMSP is less then or equal to €40,000. Then the relief can cover the entire VRT amount. Electric Motorcycles don't need to pay VRT till 31 December 2025.

Hybrid & Plug in Hybrid Vehicles (PHEVs) will pay full VRT because the relief they used is ended in December, 2022. The rate is also depend on CO₂ emissions which is starting from 9%. Commercial EVs & Vans don't have any relief until 31 December. It will pay 13.3% VRT but if the vans or electric vehicle is emitting 120g/km then they only pay 8%.

Calculating NOx and CO2 Emissions Tax

NOx emissions tax for imported cars is calculated based on nitrogen oxide emissions in mg/km, first registration date and vehicle type. From 1 January, 2020 Irish Government added the NOₓ levy to all passenger cars of category A including hybrid vehicles.

  • First 0–40 mg/km need to pay €5 per mg
  • Next 41–80 mg/km will pay €15 per mg
  • Any above 80 mg/km will pay €25 per mg

CO₂ is basically the Carbon Dioxide which a car is releasing per kilometer. If your car make more pollution you will pay more tax. The formula using for it is:

VRT = (CO₂ tax + NOₓ levy) × car’s value (OMSP)

The system is implemented so people will buy more environment friendly vehicles.
