To calculate NOx Tax for VRT you must know nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions (mg/km) of the vehicle.
- 0-40 mg/km β β¬5 per mg
- 40-80 mg/km β β¬15 per mg
- Above 80 mg/km β β¬25 per mg
NOx Tax for VRT is important when you are importing a vehicle into Ireland, you must calculate this amount and then pay motor registration duty on it. Since January 1, 2020, NOx emissions have been included in the calculation, applying to all passenger cars and light commercial vehicles registered in Ireland.
What is NOx Tax?
NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) is a harmful pollutant which mixed to air pollution, smog, and respiratory problems. To reduce vehicle emissions and maintain a cleaner transport options, the Irish government introduced the NOx levy as part of the VRT system.
The NOx tax applies to every vehicle registered in Ireland, no matter it is new or imported, and is calculated based on the vehicleβs emissions.
How NOx is Calculated?
If you want to do easy calculations just Enter NOx Emissions (mg/km) in this calculator which I give you and it calculate your actual results. If you want to do it manually just simple follow these steps:
For a vehicle emitting 100 mg/km of NOx:
- First 40 mg β 40 Γ β¬5 = β¬200
- Next 40 mg β 40 Γ β¬15 = β¬600
- Remaining 20 mg β 20 Γ β¬25 = β¬500
Total NOx Tax = β¬1,300
The NOx value comes from the Certificate of Conformity (CoC) or Vehicle Registration Certificate. You pay the tax along with the VRT at an NCTS center during vehicle registration.
Guide to Pay NOx in Ireland:
When you are going to Pay VRT at NCTS (National Car Testing Service) center you need to pay Nox also.
More, you need to Book an NCTS Appointment for which you need to bring your vehicle documents along with CoC and V5C. When you Pay, then you will receive Irish registration plates.
If you want to Reduce NOx Tax When Importing a Vehicle, you need to use:
- Diesel engines which emit higher NOx than petrol or hybrid vehicles.
- Verify NOx levels from the CoC or manufacturer data.
- Use uro 4 or Euro 5 models..
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1: Is NOx tax included in the VRT calculator?
Yes, our VRT Calculator helps you to calculate NOx Tax for VRT.
Q2: If my NOx emissions are not listed on the CoC?
Revenue will assign a default NOx value, which could result in a higher tax. Itβs best to get official NOx data from the manufacturer.
Q3: Does NOx tax apply to motorcycles?
No, the NOx levy only applies to passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.
Q4: Can I claim a refund on NOx tax?
No, once paid, the NOx tax is non refundable.
